HUNSTANTON DRAMA FESTIVAL 2008
Written Adjudication
THE LAVENDER HILL MOB THEATRE COMPANY
Romeo & Juliet
Written and Directed by Les Miles and Tim Rock (Adapted Script)
This was a very colourful, tuneful and enjoyable original production and it was appropriate and fortuitous that it should have opened the Festival. The script was crisp and to the point. The direction was sound and the overall movement and set positions worked well. The costumes were attractive and added to the understanding of the piece. In general, projection was good and the enthusiasm of the company shone through. It was particularly nice to see members of the cast giving support to each other in a very low key way. This did not, in any way, disrupt the action which was fast moving and slick. A significant achievement. There were also some strong performances and although part of me is reluctant to single out individuals in what was clearly an impressive team effort, their contribution should have some recognition. I enjoyed Brendan and Amanda as the central lovers and felt that they created a sympathetic focus for the piece. I was also impressed by Jessica Cornwell, Jessica Moore, Darrell Sampson and Jaime Goodman. The use of music was very inspirational and worked on several levels. It drew everything together and created some memorable moments. It also strengthened the team approach. Congratulations. I hope that the Company will take part in next year’s Festival.
